Supporting documents: checklist & guidance

• A copy of your passport.

   

  Guidance:

  We require a scanned colour copy of your passport's photo ID and signature page in order to verify your identity and to confirm that you are a citizen of a non-EEA country. 

• Your Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) Certificate.

   

  Guidance:

  We require a copy of your PMQ certificate as part of our verification processes.  

  We will check that your PMQ is acceptable in the UK and meets the GMC's criteria for acceptable overseas qualifications.

  You will also need to ensure that your PMQ has been independently verified by the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) - We will ask you to provide us with your EPIC ID to check that this has been done.

• Your Postgraduate Medical Qualification (PGMQ) Certificate.

   

  Guidance:

  We require a copy of your PGMQ certificate as part of our verification processes.  

  You will also need to ensure that your PGMQ has been independently verified by the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

• Your Certificate of Completion of Internship.

   

  Guidance:

  We must be satisfied that you have gained the experience needed to work as a fully registered doctor in the UK.

  You will need to submit evidence to show that you have completed an acceptable internship (or equivalent) of not less than 12 months following undergraduate training.   

  Your evidence should be a certificate or a letter from your medical school/university confirming completion of your internship.

• Your Certificate of Good Standing.

   

  Guidance:

  We require this evidence in order to check that there have been no concerns about your fitness to practice.

  You will need to submit a certificate of good standing from each medical regulatory authority that you have been registered or licensed within the last five years. 

  You will need to do this even if you have not worked in that country - they may send you a certificate of past good standing if you are not registered or licensed with them now. 

  You can find out which medical regulatory authority to contact in the GMC's Certificate of Good Standing Database.

• Your most recent, up-to-date CV.

   

  Guidance:

  We require an up-to-date CV in order to verify the details of your full academic and employment history.

  You will need to submit the most recent version of your CV, showing your engagement in medical practice for the past 5 years.

  Your CV must also show that you have been engaged in medical practice for at least 36 out of the last 60 months, including the most recent 12 months.

  Further information about the medical and non-medical experience that can be included in your CV can be found on the GMC website.

• Your test report form for either the IELTS (academic) test OR the OET (medicine version).

  
  

  Guidance:

  We need to be satisfied that you have the necessary knowledge of English to practise safely in the UK.

  Communicating includes speaking, reading, writing and listening. 

  IELTS Certificate:

  Your International English Language Testing System(IELTS) certificate must show:

  • that you took the academic version of the test;
  • that you obtained a score of at least 7.0 in each testing area and an overall score of 7.5;
  • that you obtained these scores in the same test;
  • that you obtained these scores in your most recent sitting of the test; and
  • the original stamp and test report form number. 

  IELTS certificates are valid for two years.  Your certificate must be valid at the time we decide to sponsor you for GMC registration with a licence to practise. 

  OET Certificate:

  Your Occupational English Test (OET) certificate it must show your candidate number and that you: 

  • took the medicine version of the test;
  • obtained at least a grade ‘B’ in each testing area (speaking, listening, reading and writing);
  • obtained those grades in the same test; and
  • obtained the grades in your most recent sitting of the test.

  OET certificates are valid for two years. Your certificate must be valid at the time we decide to sponsor you for GMC registration with a licence to practise.

  Please note: the OET may not be acceptable evidence of your English language skills for the purposes of obtaining a UK visa. You will need to check with UK Visa and Immigration for their requirements.

  Exemption Criteria: If you are a national of a country where English is the “first and native language” and were awarded your primary medical qualification (PMQ) from a country where the GMC considers English to be the “first and native language” you will satisfy the GMC’s exemption criteria and will not need to submit any evidence of your English language proficiency. You can find a list of these countries on the GMC’s website.

• Completed specialty logbook.

   

  Guidance:

  We require this evidence in order to assess and verify the number of operative cases that you have: (a) observed; (b) carried out under supervision; or (c) undertaken independently in the relevant specialty.  This will help us to ascertain your level of experience.

  You will need to submit a logbook, which must be:

  1.  Anonymised (patient names should be removed).

  2. Signed off as an accurate record by your current Clinical Supervisor.  

  You have the option of submitting your own logbook or using our template, which you will be able to download during the application process.

• Completed and signed structured reference (x2)

   

  Guidance:

  We ask for work references in order to verify your professional qualities, experience and capabilities.

  Your references must demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the role that will be offered to you if you are accepted onto ISTP.

  Two references are required.  Both references will need to cover the last three years of your employment.

• Certificate of completion of the MRCS (UK) exam (if applicable).

   

  Guidance:

  If you have successfully passed the MRCS (UK) Part B exam, we will require evidence of this.

  Please submit your Certificate of Completion as the supporting document.

• Employment offer letter from the NHS Trust/ Health Board.

   

  Guidance:

  You must be in receipt of a formal job offer from an NHS Trust or Health Board in order to apply for sponsorship.   The post offered must be at the level of ST3 or above.

  You will be required to submit evidence of your job offer in the form an employment offer letter.

• Job description for the NHS post.

   

  Guidance:

  We review and assess the job description in order to ensure that the post offered is suitable and contains sufficient training and educational provision.

  You will be asked to submit the job description for the post being offered to you along with your offer letter.

• Timetable for the NHS post.

   

  Guidance:

  We review and assess the timetable for the post in order to ensure compliance with the European Working Time Directive and as part of the Deanery approval process.

  If you have not been provided with a timetable, we will request this from the Trust or Health Board.
