2020 Grant recipient
Dr Charles Mabedi, an International Surgical Training Programme (ISTP) Urology Fellow from Malawi, became the first recipient of the RCS' Global Affairs ISTP Projects and Research Grant.
Dr Mabedi, a consultant urologist in Malawi, trained for two years at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust under the ISTP and returned to Malawi in December 2019. There are currently only two urologists in Malawi, serving a population of 18 million people, and many urological emergencies are managed by non-urologists (general surgeons and gynaecologists).
The award enabled Dr Mabedi to pilot two workshops on the management of urological emergencies for non-urologists, so as to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to perform procedures for conditions such as testicular torsion, acute urinary retention, bladder injury and ureteric injuries.
The outcome from these workshops will be published early 2021.
