COVID-19 FAQs: GMC registration

Please see the advice below.

• I have been offered a training post at an NHS Trust but I require GMC registration. Who should I contact and what should I do?

  If you have been offered a post and require GMC registration, you can apply to be sponsored by us through our GMC Sponsorship Scheme.

• I work at a hospital which is not ISTP Partner Institution. If I am eligible for GMC registration, can I still apply for ISTP?

  No. To be eligible for ISTP, you must either be working within or a member of an ISTP Partner Institution. However, if you have been offered a suitable NHS post in the UK and require sponsorship to the GMC medical register, you can apply for this through our GMC Sponsorship Scheme.

• I wish to apply to RCSEng for sponsorship to the GMC medical register. Must the NHS post that I have been offered be approved by the Postgraduate Deanery?

  It is a Tier 5 visa requirement that doctors wishing to enter the UK via this visa route have had their post approved as containing sufficient training by the local Postgraduate Deanery. This applies to all Tier 5 visa applications through the ISTP and GMC Sponsorship Scheme.

• I have been accepted onto ISTP but I have not been offered a placement yet. My OET/IELTS certificate is also due to expire in four months. Is it still possible for RCSEng to facilitate my GMC registration in these circumstances?

  No. The GMC does not allow us to sponsor applicants to medical register before they have been offered a suitable post that provides sufficient clinical training.
